Off Season Roster Changes

  Coming off the disgrace of second half that we witnessed last week, I’d like to see a fairly significant roster overhaul. Below are the guys I’d like to see graduate and / or move on, and I’ll include a couple transfer portal candidates I’d like to see brought in the bolster this squad. Wide receiver depth and secondary talent should be major focuses. The change from Clark Lea’s passive style of secondary play, to the aggressive man coverage that Marcus Freeman wants to play, requires much better, more fluid athletes in the secondary. Guys that can flat out cover. Furthermore, we can’t start 3 short (and short limbed) stiff kids at linebacker. You can start one of those players, but you can’t start all three and expect to hold up in the pass game. Lastly, the return of Josh Lugg raises some serious questions about offensive line composition. Most people will assume that he’ll start somewhere if he makes a healthy return. However, I don’t think he’s a guard by any stretch of the imagination. He’s too tall, without enough bend. That makes me think that our best bet might be to ask Blake Fisher to play guard for ONE year, for the overall strength of the offensive line. Below are the changes that NEED to be made, IMO.

  What are the chances Isaiah Foskey returns to Notre Dame instead of entering the draft? Because I’m not sure if he’ll be coming back he’s one of the better pass rushers in college football.

  It’s currently up in the air, although he will be making a decision this weekend. While he is an excellent pass rusher (best at ND since Stephon Tuitt, he’s currently a 2nd round pick, unless he just has a crazy combine. The season he’ll slide is simply due to the fact that this is one of the best edge classes in recent memory. You have Kayvon Thibodeaux (Oregon), Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan), George Karlaftis (Purdue), Jermaine Johnson (Florida State), David Ojabo (Michigan), DeMarvin Leal (Texas A&M), Drake Jackson (USC), Travon Walker (Georgia), Logan Hall (Houston), Myjai Sanders (Cincinnati), Amare Barno (Virginia Tech), Nick Bonitto (Oklahoma)… All of those guys could very well be off the board in the first 60-70 picks. Not to mention, there are about 6-7 more edge players that I did not mention, who are currently mocked in the 3rd-4th round range, who will be going to the combine / pro days, looking to move up into this group.

   

  With an extra year at Notre Dame, Foskey could develop into one of the 3-4 best pass rushers in the country, in a class that projects to be much more shallow in terms of talent. If he remains healthy and productive, that makes him a top 20 pick, earning a lot more cash than he would this year, slotting somewhere in the 2nd round. Furthermore, he’ll have plenty of opportunity to showcase his talent on the elite stage next year. Notre Dame will have tons of eyes on them in Freeman’s first year, with regular season games against Ohio State, Clemson and USC (Riley’s first year).

   

  One can hope he returns, because there is a lot to gain by coming back. That said, football is violent game an unfair injuries happen to players every single week. 2nd round money is still life changing for most people, therefore, it’s simply a matter of him weighing the risk vs the reward. Either way, he’s been a heck of player for ND.
